President & Principal Designer

Alexandra founded the firm in Montreal, Canada and quickly established a reputation for developing bespoke designs of the highest caliber. Alexandra completed her design training at the Espirito Santo Foundation in Lisbon, Portugal . Born and raised in Portugal, Alexandra received her early education in Switzerland and England. 

Alexandra brings a dynamic intellectual curiosity and an absence of pretense to her work. Drawing upon a wealth of personal experiences and professional commissions throughout Europe, Africa, Asia and South America, her work is known for subtle references unique to her multi-faceted vantage point. With a unique talent for the application of color, pattern, texture and a seasoned understanding of the foundations and principals of classic design Alexandra remains an uncompromising aesthete respectful of the needs of her clients and the cultural context of each project.

Whilst in Montreal, Alexandra served on the board of the Commissions des Biens Culturels du Québec and was an active member of Heritage Montreal. She is presently a member of the Network for Executive Women in Hospitality, the International Interior Design Association and is a past vice-president of the US-Portugal Chamber of Commerce 

In 2012 Alexandra was inducted into the Interior Design Hall of Fame, in 2000 she was awarded the Platinum Circle for Lifetime Achievement by Hospitality Design magazine and was honored in 2009 by Interior Design and Hotels magazines, as the Interior Designer of the Year. 

Alexandra drives the creative process on all of the firm's projects and oversees the overall relationship with clients.

Ed Bakos

Ed Bakos AIA, IIDA

Managing Director & Partner

Ed Bakos joined Champalimaud in December 2012 as Managing Director. Mr. Bakos' extensive luxury hospitality and restaurant experience, spanning 26 years, has positioned him as a leader in the design industry.

Ed is recognized for his ability to collaborate with high profile clients on complex projects to create innovative and engaging guest experiences. Past projects have included the first W Hotel, the Belvedere Hotel in Mykonos, the Cosmopolitan Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, and the Andaz Wall Street. Ed served as Principal in charge of interior design for the Marina Bay Sands Project in Singapore.

In addition to his hospitality experience, Ed has also completed numerous signature restaurants and award winning bars including the Cosmopolitan's Chandelier Bar, Jaleo Restaurant, and the Talon Club as well as Langham Chicago's new Travelle Restaurant. Other notable restaurants include Bobby Flay Steak in Atlantic City, The National and Town for chef Geoffrey Zakarian in New York, Wall and Water at the Andaz Wall Street, and Print Restaurant and Press Lounge at the Ink 48 hotel in Manhattan.

Over the course of his career, Ed's work has been the recipient of numerous design awards, including a Presidential Design Award for his role in the renovation of the Lower Concourse of New York's Grand Central Terminal, several Gold Key Awards, and a Boutique Design Award for Best Hotel in 2010. He was a member of the Think Team for the World Trade Center redevelopment and has given numerous lectures about his work.

A graduate of Cornell University with a Bachelor of Architecture and a Masters in Architecture from Harvard University, Mr. Bakos worked for several years overseas teaching architecture at Cornell University's Rome Program and at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich. Ed returned to New York to join Rockwell Group, where he served as Principal and Studio Leader for 18 years.

Winston Kong

Partner

Winston Kong joined Champalimaud in 1995 as an Architectural Designer and rapidly proved himself to be a strong leader and gifted designer valued by both the firm and its clientele. From 2005 to 2008, Winston has overseen the design and completion of a number of international award-winning projects including The Astor Hotel in Tianjin and the Berkeley in London, to name a few.

One of Winston's most celebrated accomplishments at Champalimaud was the transformation of Beacon Hill's 19th Century Charles Street Jail into what is now the Liberty Hotel (Boston, MA), which garnered two Gold Key Awards - Grand for Best Hotel Design and Best Hotel Lobby - in 2008.

Prior to joining Champalimaud, Winston worked on high-end residential design projects at Marcelle Aizenstat Studio Interiors in Miami, Florida and served as a Junior Architect at Raphael Viñoly Architects.

Winston graduated from the Pratt Institute with a Bachelor of Arts in Architecture and completed a multidisciplinary summer studio program at the University of Copenhagen where he studied architecture, interior design and industrial design.

Jon Kastl

Jon Kastl

Jon, LEED AP, brings to his role as Principal at Champalimaud over 20 years of experience in Hospitality, Residential and Restaurant design, as well as a resume populated by some of the world's most exclusive hotel properties.

Jon has an ability to transform a grand, complex design vision to a reality at a five-star level, thoroughly considering what luxury hotels need from an interior design as well as an operational stand point. His successful completion of the Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles, which received several Hospitality and International Design Awards, is one of his proudest accomplishments.

Jon received his Bachelor of Science in Design from the College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning at the University of Cinncinnati. Before joining the firm in 2009, Jon's projects included The Four Seasons Bora Bora, The Four Seasons Resort Camelo (Uruguay), Matsui at the Grand Hyatt (Santiago, Chile), and the Peninsula (Chicago, IL).

Thomas Johnson

Thomas Johnson

Director of Development

Thomas Johnson has joined the growing Champalimaud team as Director of Development as of 2014. He has extensive international experience in design and development with a particular focus on resorts and exclusive residential projects. His expertise is complimented by a long history in hospitality design and he has firsthand knowledge of how to structure and deliver services across the globe.

His previous design experience includes planning and design for residential and luxury resorts in North America, Europe, Middle East, India, and throughout Asia.

Thomas is a frequent speaker at industry conferences and events. He travels extensively reaching out to new and existing clients as part of his role at Champalimaud.

Elisabeth Rogoff

Elisabeth Rogoff

Principal

Elisabeth joined Champalimaud as a Senior Designer in 2006, where her art direction and knowledge of FF&E has been instrumental in creating designs that represent the firm's distinct aesthetic.

Elisabeth has led some of Champalimaud's most recognized hospitality projects to date including the Hotel Bel-Air, Waldorf Astoria, St. Regis Jakarta, Topping Rose House, and the New York Palace Hotel.

Prior to joining Champalimaud, Elisabeth collaborated on high-end residential projects at Selldorf Architects, and then served as a Senior Designer at Skidmore Owens & Merrill (SOM) where she helmed projects including the Messilah Beach Hotel and Spa (Kuwait), Pritzker Hyatt Offices (Chicago, IL) and the marketing floor at 7 World Trade Center (New York, NY). Earlier, Elisabeth participated in the design of the Little Dixie Bay Hotel (Virginia Gorda, B.V.I), The Mansion on Turtle Creek (Dallas), and Las Ventanas al Paraiso Spa (Los Cabos, Mexico) over the course of five years at Vision Design Dallas. 

Elisabeth earned her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology & English from the University of Texas at Austin in 1994, and later completed a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design from the American Intercontinental University (Atlanta) in 1996.

Anna Dufendach

Anna Beeber

Principal

Anna Beeber joined Champalimaud in 2010.  She creates thoughtful and functional designs for Champalimaud’s hospitality and private sectors and takes pride in her ability to transform spaces by bringing ideas and inspirations to life.  Anna’s scope of expertise spans from product design, interior design, and construction management, which she has applied to notable assignments including New York’s iconic hotels The Carlyle and The Waldorf Astoria as well as a series of luxury residential projects. 

Anna’s ability to connect with our clients and provide unique experiences has landed her the opportunity to design luxury residences from the sunny beaches of the Bahamas to the cobblestone streets of London. Internally, Anna collaborates closely with founder Alexandra Champalimaud on the Champalimaud Collection including private label furniture, fabrics and trims available at Holland & Sherry and rugs for The Rug Company. 

Raised in Alaska, Ms. Beeber graduated from Georgetown University with a degree in Sociology and went on to earn her post-graduate degree in Architectural Interior Design from the prestigious Inchbald School of Design in London.

Robert Vertes

Robert Vertes

During Robert’s career, projects with a focus on food, retail and hospitality have been his passion. Whether it’s working with award winning chefs or luxury brands, Robert strives to create designs that celebrate place-making and innovation.

Robert joined Champalimaud in 2016 after an accomplished tenure at the Related Companies. As a senior member of Related’s team his responsibilities included overseeing the design creation and development of projects initiated within their mixed-use retail business unit. While at Related, Robert acted as the Owner’s design manager and primary client representative for The Shops at Hudson Yards; a 1 million square foot retail center located within the historic Hudson Yards development.

Previous to his work at Related Robert was a senior member at the Rockwell Group and was the design-lead and site representative for the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas Resort.

Robert brings over 20 years of professional experience to his role of Principal at Champalimaud. As a leader he has successfully mentored and managed teams of architects and designers on high profile projects world-wide. His diverse experiences, expertise, and knowledge lend wisdom to every project he spearheads.

Robert received a Masters of Architecture from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Architecture from Tulane University.

Alan Mainer

Alan Mainer

Alan first joined Champalimuad in 2002 and returned in 2012 after a hiatus with Cheryl Rowley Design in Los Angeles, Cheng Meng Furniture and Tony Chi & Associates in New York. As Senior Designer at Champalimaud, Alan brings a comprehensive understanding of all aspects of interior design, with extensive experience in furniture design and project management. He has a keen ability to bridge the gap between a property's historical and local aesthetic context and its 21st century aspirations.

One of Alan's most distinguished accomplishments at Champalimaud is the Loews New Orleans Hotel, where he translated the distinctive elements of New Orleans' architectural heritage to give the hotel a fresh, modern and successful identity. Alan also led the suite redesign at The Dorchester Hotel, London, as well as The Waldorf Chengdu, PR China.

Projects with previous firms include The Chancery Court Hotel (London), Grand Hyatt Chengdu (PR China), Grand Hyatt Gurgaon (India), Four Seasons St. Petersburg (Russia), Burj Penthouse Dubai (UAE) and Maravilla Senior Living Resort (Scottsdale, Arizona.) 

Originally from Panama, Alan earned his BFA in Interior Design from the Fashion Institute of Technology and studied design at Parsons School of Design and the School of Visual Arts. He first met Alexandra Champalimaud when she spoke at the Algonquin Hotel, and was deeply inspired by her passion for carrying the storied history of landmark properties into the future.

Jun Chun is a distinguished interior designer and tastemaker best known for his enchanting take on interiors and the luxury lifestyle. Jun’s design expertise and proficiency with architectural detailing combine effortlessly with his skills as a lead designer for Champalimaud. He sets a high standard for quality at every stage of a project from proposal and pricing through design and execution. Jun’s most recent work includes five star hotel properties and residential projects such as Chatham Bars Inn in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, Biwako Takashima Resort in Shiga, Japan and a private residence in London, UK. 

Mediating between architectural and decorative details, Jun produces an integrated, seamless product, and is skilled at encouraging a high level of workmanship from the contractors, millworkers, and other trades with whom he works during the entire project process. Jun has designed high-end residential projects throughout the United States and Asia including the Galleria in Dalian, China, CA Ventures Luxurious Apartments and the Park Tower Condominiums in Chicago, Illinois. 

A Korean native, Jun studied architecture at Pratt Institute in New York City and received his Bachelor of Interior Architecture from The School of The Art Institute of Chicago. He is fluent in Korean.

Chatu Ranasinghe

Chatu Ranasinghe

A Senior Designer who began her career at Champalimaud, Chatu has cultivated a sharp eye for detail and is dedicated to the highest standards of delivery, ensuring that projects are perfectly finished down to their smallest elements. With over a decade of experience in hospitality design, she aims to see projects through the eyes of the client as well as the guest. This combination of empathy and attention to refinement has resulted in spectacular success stories for five-star properties such as the Hotel Bel-Air in Los Angeles.

Since joining Champalimaud in 2004, Chatu has completed some of the firm's most prestigious and challenging hospitality projects, including the Peninsula New York Spa, The Gainsborough hotel and spa in Bath, England, and the acclaimed renovation of Hotel Bel-Air, where she supervised the completion of the highly individualized guest suites as well as the Spa by La Prairie.

Born in Sri Lanka, Chatu graduated from Maryland Institute College of Art in 2004 having earned a degree in Environmental Design, with a concentration in Interior Design.

Sang Wook Oh

Sang Wook Oh

Sang Wook Oh is an expert draftsman with extensive knowledge of architectural standards, from general space and millwork design to mechanical systems to building codes. He specializes in schematic preparation, construction documentation and design development for hotel and residential renovations as well as new construction projects.

He joined the firm in 2006 with 11 years of experience in architectural design, and loves working in a range of architectural styles alongside the diverse and highly experienced team at Champalimaud. 

Originally from Korea, Sang received a Bachelor of Engineering in Interior Architecture from Gachon University and earned a Master of Fine Arts in Interior Design from the Savannah College of Art and Design in Savannah, GA.

Sang has worked on a variety of international projects, with Champlimaud, including The Hilton Guiyang (PR China), the Penthouse renovation at The Fairmont San Francisco, the St. Regis Beijing (PR China), The Carlyle Hotel (New York), the Green Leaf Niseko Village (Japan) and the White Elephant Hotel (Nantucket, MA.)

Courtney Brannan

Courtney possesses a strong background in interior architecture, interior design, project management and construction administration, bringing great energy to each residential and hospitality and to the Champalimaud team. She was a key team member in the recently opened The Island House, a 30-key boutique hotel in property and gathering space located in West Nassau, The Bahamas. 

Since joining Champalimaud, Courtney brings her knowledge of interior architecture and design and has demonstrated her ability to successfully lead projects from concept to completion. She adds a personal perspective to each project through her attention to detail while managing the complex schedule and budget requirements of her projects. Courtney’s work at Champalimaud has included both hospitality and residential projects world-wide. 

Courtney earned a Bachelor of Science in Interior Design from Auburn University and actively participates in IIDA and ASID mentoring events.
